V. Notes on Comparisons

STAAD.Pro can be used to model a wide variety of different situations and scenarios. In order to illustrate how the methods used in STAAD.Pro are suitable to be used in these situations, a number of models have been created that simulate situations that have been described in various publications that include results that can be compared to those produced by STAAD.Pro. Alternatively, scenarios can be modelled in STAAD.Pro and the results compared to standard theories which can be themselves modelled using hand calculations.

Each verification problem that follows describes a scenario problem and a reference publication or set of hand calculations using generally accepted theories.

The problem will identify a selected number of values that are reported in the theory and can be produced by STAAD.Pro. These values are summarized in a comparison table that identifies one or more comparisons for each:

  1. A description of the value being compared.
  2. The value from the published document (i.e., theory)
  3. The value as produced in STAAD.Pro
  4. A percentage difference between STAAD.Pro and the theory (i.e. = |  STAAD.Pro value  -  theory value  | theory value ) as a percentage.

As the methods used in STAAD.Pro may differ for the theory used in the publication or hand calculation, there is a possibility that the STAAD.Pro result and theory value may indicate a significant percentage difference. However, the values themselves may not be significant. Therefore, comments will be provided in the verification where both the values and the percentage difference is significant. Note that what constitutes a significant value will vary from verification to verification.
